Normally, I don’t drink an entire bottle of wine. Notice the word “normally.” On those rare days, I have to re-cork and save for
later (hoping that my husband does not guzzle it down before I have a chance
to have another glass or two). One thing I have learned is that oxygen turns
red wine into vinegar. Eww! Some days
are stressful, but not that stressful that I have to start drinking
vinegar.
The best way to keep oxygen out
of the bottle is to drink the entire thing.
LOL! In the event that is not an
option, another way is to cork it and store it in the refrigerator. I know that sounds strange considering red
wine should be served at room temperature (between 62 – 68 degrees), but it
does work and will keep your wine tasting like wine for 3 to 5 days. The darker the wine, the longer it will
last. If you are like me, you only have
½ the bottle left, so you'll most likely drink the rest of it when you open
it back up. Put the bottle in lukewarm
water for a few minutes to slowly increase the temperature of the wine. Doing it too fast will cause the wine to
break down and taste gross.
Unfortunately, I had to throw a bottle out the other day. My daughter saw me as I was pouring it in the sink.
Chey: MOM!!! What are you doing?!?!?!
Me: Throwing out the wine. It went bad.
Chey: That frickin sucks!
Me: Chey!! (pause) You're right, it does suck.
Then she looks at me with a sincere and concerned look on her face.
Chey: Are you okay?
Even my kid knows I hate to waste wine!
Wasting wine is a sin...(looking in the Bible now for a reference). ;)
